Stonehill Sweeps UMass Lowell in NE-10 Opener


Freshman Jocelynne Morrell had four hits and scored two runs over the Skyhawks two wins today. 

Wilcox homers in both wins, Morrell collects four hits to pace Skyhawks offense

LOWELL, Mass. (March 31, 2011) – Stonehill College opened conference play by sweeping a doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at River View Field this afternoon. The Skyhawks posted a 6-3 win in game one, before holding on for a 6-5 victory in game two.

Freshman Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) paced the Stonehill offense as she hit a combined 4-for-6 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) homered twice and drove in five runs for the Skyhawks, while senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) batted 3-for-8 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored over the two games.

Junior Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) led UMass Lowell by going a combined 2-for-4 with a walk, while senior Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) contributed a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.

Stonehill 6, UMass Lowell 3

Stonehill overcame one big inning for UMass Lowell to claim a 6-3 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Jocelynne Morrell had half of Stonehill's hits in the game as she finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Katy Abarr was 2-for-4 with a home run, while Kelsey Wilcox hit 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) batted 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) earned the win in the circle for Stonehill (1-3), scattering two hits and a walk over 3.2 scoreless innings of relief with a strikeout. Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) started and yielded three runs, two earned, on four hits with a walk. Sophomore Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) retired the only batter she faced with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to earn her first save of the season.

Heather Ross led UMass Lowell by batting 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while sophomore Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) took the loss for UML (10-6), allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and no strikeouts over five innings. She also collected an RBI in the contest.


Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox homered twice and drove in five runs for the Skyhawks this afternoon. 

 

Stonehill scored single runs in the first, second and third innings to stake out a 3-0 lead. Stryker led off the first with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilcox. Morrell led off the second with a single through the left side and scored on a groundout by Stryker. Abarr drilled her first home run of the season (fifth career) in the third.

UMass Lowell knotted the score with three runs in the home half of the third. Ross delivered an RBI single, with a second run scoring on a Stonehill error on the play. Boris tied the score at 3-3 when Ross, who singled, scored on her ground out.

Stonehill quickly regained the lead with a two-run fourth as Morrell led off with a single to center and later scored on an error. Stryker reached on a fielder's choice that allowed senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), who doubled, to score. The Skyhawks added insurance in the fifth with Wilcox's fifth home run of the season.

Stonehill 6, UMass Lowell 5

Stonehill held off a late rally to complete the sweep with a 6-5 victory in game two.

Kelsey Wilcox went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI for Stonehill. Nicole Eisenmann finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, while Katy Abarr was 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.


Senior Katy Abarr had three hits, including her first home run of the season, and two RBI today. 

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) earned the win (2-1) in the circle for Stonehill, allowing four earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and two walks in 4.1 innings. Freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) earned her first collegiate save, allowing an earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk in the final 2.2 innings.

Elyssa Boris was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for UMass Lowell. Junior Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) hit 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, while Heather Ross finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Boris took the loss again in the circle (10-7), allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

Stonehill struck first with a five-run first. Abarr sparked the inning with an RBI double before Wilcox delivered her sixth home run of the year with a three-run shot. Sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) scored the final run on a double steal with Morrell. UMass Lowell got a run back in the bottom of the first with Ross' third homer of the season.

Stonehill extended its lead to 6-1 in the fifth as sophomore Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) led off with a single and later scored on a single by Eisenmann. UMass Lowell got back in the game with four in the home half of the fifth with a pair of two-run homers from Guy and Boris, but McKillop took care of the lead from there for Stonehill.

 

Stonehill (6-12, 2-0 NE-10) is scheduled to return to action on Saturday when it opens its home schedule with a Northeast-10 doubleheader against Saint Michael's College starting at 12:30 p.m. UMass Lowell (14-10, 0-2 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday at noon.
