Stonehill Closes Out Spring Break Trip

#14 Augustana edges Skyhawks 4-3, LIU-C.W. Post posts 8-1 win over Skyhawks

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 19, 2011) – Stonehill College closed out its spring break trip with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked opponents today at the Rebel Spring Games. Augustana (S.D.) College, ranked 14th in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll, posted a 4-3 victory over the Skyhawks in game one of the day, before LIU-C.W. Post, among teams receiving votes nationally, picked up an 8-1 win over the Skyhawks in game two.
#14 Augustana 4, Stonehill 3

Augustana rallied from a pair of early deficits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to come away with the win over Stonehill in the Skyhawks first game of the day.

Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) hit 2-for-4 with an RBI for Stonehill, while freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Sophomore Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) was 2-for-3, while senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

McKillop took the loss in the circle for Stonehill, allowing four runs, just one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks in four-plus innings. Classmate Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) went the final three innings, allowing no runs on no hits with a walk and no strikeouts.

Stonehill opened the scoring with a pair in the top of the first with RBI singles from Abarr and McKillop. Augustana answered right back in the home half as senior Traci Fransen (Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central) doubled in a run and then scored when sophomore Chelsi Winkowski (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) reached on an error.

Stonehill regained the lead in the second when sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) walked, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a single by Stryker. The Vikings answered right back again in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Brittany Coufal (Lincoln, Neb./North Star) reached on a two-base error and scored on a single by classmate Theresa McMahon (Hartford, S.D./West Central).

McMahon scored the go-ahead run in the fifth when she singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Fransen.

LIU-C.W. Post 8, Stonehill 1

C.W. Post broke a tie game with a five-run sixth and added two more in its final at bat to defeat Stonehill 8-1 going away.

Five-straight singles resulted in the go-ahead run for C.W. Post in the sixth, before junior Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) drew a bases loaded walk and sophomore Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) delivered a two-run single in the decisive inning.

Chelsea Stryker was once again 2-for-4 for Stonehill with a run scored, while freshman Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) went 2-for-3. Nicole Eisenmann finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) hit 1-for-2.

Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks over 5.1 innings.

Stonehill opened the scoring with a run in the first as Stryker led off with a single and scored on a single through the left side by Eisenmann. C.W. Post got that run right back in the top of the second on a leadoff home run by freshman Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y./Commack).

 

Stonehill (2-10, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Friday, March 25, when it visits Nyack College for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks are scheduled to open their home schedule with a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Saint Michael's College on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
