Stonehill Splits Pair at Rebel Spring Games


Senior Katy Abarr was a combined 4-for-7 this afternoon, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the win over Caldwell. 

Skyhawks bounce back with 5-2 win over Caldwell, fall to Minnesota-Duluth, 4-0

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 16, 2011) – Stonehill College snapped a string of four-straight losses by splitting a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games today. The Skyhawks avenged a loss to Caldwell College on Tuesday with a 5-2 win over the Cougars today, before dropping a 4-0 decision to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in game two.

Stonehill avenged a loss to Caldwell on Tuesday by posting a 5-2 victory over the Cougars in today's opening game.

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) and junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) combined for the win in the circle for Stonehill. Schneider earned the win, allowing two runs, just one earned, on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk in 4.2 innings. Krantz picked up her first save of the year with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, yielding just a hit with a strikeout and no walks.

Senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) paced the Stonehill offense as she hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) chipped in by going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Stonehill opened the scoring with two runs in the second, loading the bases with singles by Abarr and Miller sandwiched around an error that allowed sophomore Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) to reach. Langlois followed with a two-run double to left center with two out. The Skyhawks doubled their lead in the third on RBI singles from Abarr and freshman Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven).


Freshman Nicole Schneider earned the win in the circle in game one. 

Caldwell cut the Stonehill lead in half with a pair of runs in the home half of the third, but the Skyhawks held the Cougars right there and added an insurance run in the fifth. Abarr singled and was sacrificed to second before scoring on a double by Miller.

Minnesota-Duluth 4, Stonehill 0

Minnesota-Duluth shut Stonehill out on three hits and took advantage of a pair of sixth inning errors to key its 4-0 win.

Freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) took the loss in the circle for Stonehill, allowing three runs, just one earned, on four hits with a strikeout and no walks over 5.2 innings.

Katy Abarr and freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) both hit 1-for-3 for the Skyhawks.

Minnesota-Duluth opened the scoring in the second on a solo home run by sophomore Tyra Kerr (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East). The Bulldogs added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth after two Stonehill errors with two out fueled the frame. The two errors and a single by senior Sammie Gardner (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) chased Schneider and then sophomore Ashley Buirge (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Brooklyn Park) greeted junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) with a two-run single to left.

UMD capped the scoring with a run in the seventh as junior Carlie Schnoebelen (New Hampton, Iowa) singled and scored on a double to left center by sophomore Ashley Johnson (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount).

Stonehill (2-6, 0-0 NE-10) has a day off on Thursday before returning to action on Friday to face Wayne State (Mich.) University at 11 a.m., before battling Tiffin University at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks are scheduled to open their home schedule with a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Saint Michael's College on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
