Senior Kate Brides had four hits and two runs scored in the two games against Southern Connecticut on Saturday.

Late Inning Rallies Not Enough For Skyhawks In Sweep

Easton, Mass. - In both seventh innings of Saturday's doubleheader with Southern Connecticut, Stonehill made valiant rallies but in both cases however, the Skyhawks came up short dropping game one 6-5 and game two 6-3 in Northeast-10 Conference softball action on Father Gartland Field.

The losses drop Stonehill to 10-20 overall and 10-8 in Northeast-10 play while Southern Connecticut moves to 25-9 and 14-6 in league action.

In game one, Stonehill was holding on to a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning when the Owls put together four hits and four runs highlighted by a two-run single to center by Julianne Flood.

Southern Connecticut added two more runs in the sixth one of which came on a leadoff homerun from Kerry Iacomini.

With the score 6-2, the Skyhawks closed the gap in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass.).

A two-run homerun by Courtney Young (Danvers, Mass.) in the bottom of the seventh made the game 6-5. A single from Meghan Sheehy (East Islip, N.Y.) and a walk by Marrero put runners on first and second with two outs but Owls' closer Iacomini induced Katie Mottau into a flyout to center to earn her third save of the season.

Game two also saw the Skyhawks take an early lead, this time 2-1 on an RBI single from Kristen Clark (Brockton, Mass.) and a bases loaded walk by Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn.).

The Owls answered right back with three runs in the fourth highlighted by an Iacomini double to take a 4-2 lead. An infield single scored two runs in the sixth for Southern Connecticut upping their advantage to 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Stonehill put runners on second and third with one out and got their lone run of the inning on an RBI groundout from Sheehy.

Marrero and Kate Brides (West Bridgewater, Mass.) were the hitting stars for the Skyhawks, with Marrero going 3-for-5 with three walks in the doubleheader and Bridges going 4-for-8 in the two games.

Stonehill returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Pace on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
