EASTON, Mass.-- Senior Liz Eymold (Franklin Square, N.Y.) rapped out three hits and drove in six runs in the nightcap alone as Southern Connecticut swept a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader from Stonehill by scores of 2-1 in the opener and 13-7 in the second contest in games played Tuesday afternoon at Gartland Field.

The visiting Owls (28-9, 17-3 Northeast-10) used an RBI double off the bat of senior Courtney Miniter (Branford, Conn.) to plate an unearned run in the seventh inning of the opener for the game-winner, as Southern Connecticut forged a 1-1 tie in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn.) after the host Skyhawks (10-20, 9-11 Northeast-10) had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Jaime Ippolito. Junior Jessica Dempsey (Stratford, Conn.) made that stand up on the mound for the Owls, allowing five hits and the unearned run while striking out six to go to 12-2 on the season, while freshman Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass.) allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out five in a tough-luck setback for Stonehill, which received a pair of hits off the bat of junior Lauren Polselli (Portsmouth, R.I.).

Five home runs highlighted a combined 25-hit attack by the teams in the nightcap, as Southern Connecticut grabbed a 3-0 second inning lead on a two-run Eymold double that followed an RBI single by sophomore Amanda St. George (Shelton, Conn.) only to see Stonehill come back with three in the bottom of the third to even matters on a three-run homer off the bat of junior Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.), her first of the season. The Owls took the lead for good on Eymold's three-run homer in the fourth and added three fifth inning runs on RBI singles by Eymold, St. George and sophomore Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, N.Y.) to take a 9-3 edge, and after the Skyhawks closed to within 9-5 on a two-run blast by sophomore Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass.), the visitors added two runs in each of their last two at-bats on an RBI single by freshman Christina Wolf (Newtown, Conn.), a run-scoring double by senior Lindsey Castano (Oakdale, Conn.) and Savarese's fourth home run of the spring. Marrero's second two-run homer of the contest in the seventh, her fourth round tripper of the spring and third in the last three games, closed out the Stonehill scoring.

Wolf joined Eymold with three hits in the nightcap triumph for the Owls, who also received two hits each from St. George, Castano, Gandley and freshman Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.). Sophomore Amanda Pindar (New Britain, Conn.) picked up the win on the mound for Southern Connecticut despite allowing five runs in five innings of work to go to 8-1 on the season, as Marrero collected three of Stonehill's nine hits in the nightcap while combining with Rappoli to drive in all seven runs for the hosts. Sophomore Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Skyhawks to fall to 5-6 on the spring.

Stonehill heads to Waltham, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Bentley in a Northeast-10 doubleheader that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Southern Connecticut hosts American International in a Northeast-10 twinbill on Thursday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. beginning at 3:00 p.m.
