MANCHESTER, N.H.-- Senior Brook Capello (Hanover, Mass.) had a pair of hits and drove in two runs as Stonehill gained a split of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday afternoon by posting a 5-3 eight inning triumph in the opener of the twinbill at Penmen Field. The Penmen notched a 5-2 win in the nightcap to salvage the split.

The visiting Skyhawks (11-8-1, 4-3-1 Northeast-10) trailed 3-0 in the opener before evening matters in the top of the sixth on an error and Capello's two-run single, and Stonehill pushed a pair of tallies across in the top of the eighth when sophomore Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.) singled, advanced to second on a Capello single and scored on an error. Capello added an insurance run for the visitors on a groundout, and sophomore Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) took care of the rest on the mound for the Skyhawks, as she scattered nine hits and allowed one earned run in going the distance to improve to 7-2 on the season. Freshmen Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, Mass.) and Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, Mass.) each had two hits and drove in a run in the opening setback for Southern New Hampshire, as Bernstein allowed eight hits and one earned run over 7 1/3 innings of work and struck out 11 in falling to 3-5 for the Penmen, which also received two hits each from junior Felicia Brum (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Ashley Guertin (Manchester, N.H.).

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead in the nightcap and extended that margin to 4-0 in the third on Brum's two-run double, and Stonehill plated a run in the fourth to close to within 4-1 on Ippolito's RBI single before the Penmen answered back with a tally in the sixth on a double by freshman Michelle Maranto (East Hampstead, N.H.). The Skyhawks loaded the bases in the seventh and plated an unearned run on a throwing error but go no closer, as junior Ashley Smith (Franklin, N.H.) went the distance on the mound for the hosts in allowing six hits and striking out 11 to go to 4-4. Capello and freshman Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass.) each had two hits in the setback for Stonehill, as freshman Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) allowed seven hits in suffering the setback on the mound for the Skyhawks, falling to 4-3 on the season.

Stonehill returns to Manchester on Wednesday afternoon for a Northeast-10 twinbill with Saint Anselm that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Southern New Hampshire entertains LeMoyne in a Northeast-10 doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Penmen Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
