EASTON, Mass.-- Junior Brook Capello’s (Hanover, Mass.) two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh capped a four-run rally and led Stonehill to an 8-7 Northeast-10 Conference softball victory over Southern Connecticut Wednesday afternoon at Gartland Field. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie in the nightcap in a game called after five innings due to darkness.

Capello’s heroics capped a five-run comeback for the host Chieftains (11-17-1, 10-9-1 Northeast-10) in the opener, as Stonehill trailed by a 5-0 margin heading into the middle innings and saw the visiting Owls (18-7-2, 10-6-1 Northeast-10) tack on two more in the fifth for a 7-3 advantage. The Chieftains closed to within 7-4 with an unearned run in the sixth, and freshman Caitlin Flanagan’s (Cornwall, N.Y.) two-run double sliced Stonehill’s deficit to 7-6 in their last at-bat. Southern Connecticut recorded the second out of the inning with runners at the corners, and after a walk to sophomore Kristen Demick (East Hampton, Conn.) loaded the bases, Capello lifted a single to left that capped the Chieftain comeback and presented the hosts with their fourth straight victory.

Southern Connecticut jumped out to a 4-0 second inning advantage in the opener that featured a two-run double by freshman Andrea DeCesaris (West Warwick, R.I.) and a run-scoring single off the bat of senior Jessica Hernandez (Milford, Conn.), and the Owls added a run in the third on a DeCesaris fielder’s choice groundout. Stonehill answered back with three runs in the fourth on Demick’s bases-loaded double, and DeCesaris knocked in her fourth run with a fifth inning double before scoring on a passed ball, setting up the Chieftain late inning heroics.

Flanagan and freshman Jamie Ludwig (Trumbull, Conn.) each collected two hits in the opener for Stonehill, while Hernandez rapped out three hits in the setback for Southern Connecticut, as the Chieftains outhit the Owls by a 9-6 margin. Freshman Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) allowed just six hits and three earned runs in picking up her third win of the season for the hosts, while junior Kelly Brenner (Hamden, Conn.) took the loss on the mound for Southern Connecticut, fanning seven in 6 2/3 innings of work without allowing an earned run to fall to 8-5 on the season.

Stonehill jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap, plating two in the first on an RBI single by freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.) and an RBI double by freshman Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.), and the Chieftains added a single run in the second on an RBI single by freshman Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.). Southern Connecticut answered back with three runs in the third on a two-run double by Brenner and an RBI single by senior Jaime Johnson (Seymour, Conn.), and the score remained tied until darkness forced the game to be stopped after five. The tie is the second of the season for the Owls, who earlier tied Palm Beach Atlantic in non-league play on March 22nd.

Folan, Rappoli and Ippolito each had two hits in the nightcap for Stonehill, while five different players recorded safeties for Southern Connecticut. Freshmen Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) and Jessica Dempsey (Stratford, Conn.) each pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs for the Chieftains and Owls, respectively.

Stonehill hosts UMass Lowell in a Northeast-10 doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Gartland Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Southern Connecticut hosts Bridgeport in a non-league doubleheader on Thursday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. beginning at 3:00 p.m.
