COLCHESTER, Vt.-- Sophomore Kristen Demick (East Hampton, Conn.) and freshman Gina Vivona (Seaford, N.Y.) each collected three hits as part of a 12-hit attack in leading Stonehill to a 6-2 nightcap victory over Saint Michael’s and a split of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. The host Purple Knights took the opener by a 5-0 final.

The visiting Chieftains (13-21-1, 11-12-1 Northeast-10) remained in the hunt for a conference playoff spot by scoring all six of their runs in the first three innings of action, as an RBI single by freshman Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.) gave Stonehill a 2-0 first inning lead, and an RBI double by freshman Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.) extended that margin to 3-0 in the second. An RBI single off the bat of freshman Lauren Polselli (Portsmouth, R.I.), coupled with a two-run triple by Demick, closed out the scoring for the Chieftains, as freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) went the distance in allowing three hits and no earned runs while fanning three to improve to 6-4 on the mound for the visitors.

The host Purple Knights (19-10, 12-7 Northeast-10) scored all five of their runs in the opener in the first four innings of action, as sophomores Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt.) and Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass.) each drove in two runs in the first game triumph for Saint Michael’s, as Brooks belted a two-run homer, her second of the season. Juniors Elizabeth Pigeon (St. Albans, Vt.) and Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt.) each had two hits in the opener for the hosts, as sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt.) allowed just two hits and fanned 10 in posting her 16th win in 18 decisions on the mound for the Purple Knights. Flanagan and Folan accounted for both Stonehill hits in the opener, as sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.) took the setback on the mound for the Chieftains.

Stonehill hosts LeMoyne in a Northeast-10 doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Gartland Field beginning at Noon, while Saint Michael’s travels to Manchester, N.H. on Friday afternoon for a Northeast-10 twinbill with Saint Anselm that begins at 2:00 p.m.
