FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Stonehill softball team suffered a pair of tough one-run setbacks as play continued at the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday afternoon, as the Chieftains dropped a 6-5 eight inning decision to Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) in the opener before falling by a 3-2 final to Cornerstone (Mich.) in the nightcap in contests played at Cape Coral Field.

Stonehill (1-6) dropped its second extra inning decision of the young season in the opener against the Pumas (5-4), as freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) pitched into the seventh for the Chieftains before giving way to sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.), who absorbed the loss in the eighth inning. Freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI in the opening game setback for Stonehill, which also received two hits off the bat of freshman Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.).

Freshman Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) went the distance on the mound in the nightcap for the Chieftains, who received an RBI triple from freshman Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by senior Kate McAuley (Franklin, Mass.) to account for their runs. Junior Christine Grenache (Leominster, Mass.) went 3-for-3 in the second game setback to the Golden Eagles (5-0) in the first ever meeting between the schools.

Stonehill wraps up play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday morning, as the Chieftains square off with Bridgeport at 9:00 a.m. and has a re-match with Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) at 11:00 a.m. in non-league action at Cape Coral Field.
