GAME #1 FINAL: GENEVA (PA.) 5, STONEHILL 4 (8 INNINGS)

GAME #2 FINAL: AQUINAS 5, STONEHILL 1

FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Stonehill softball team dropped a pair of non-league contests on Monday evening as the Gene Cusic Classic continued at Cape Coral Field, as the Chieftains dropped a 5-4 decision to Geneva (Pa.) in eight innings in the opener before falling by a 5-1 final to Aquinas (Mich.) in the nightcap.

Stonehill (1-3) battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the opener to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on a three-run homer by junior Christine Grenache (Leominster, Mass.), but the Golden Tornadoes (1-0) evened matters in the seventh and took a two-run cushion in the top of the eighth. The Chieftains answered back with a run in the bottom of the eighth but could come no closer, as sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.), this week’s Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, took the loss on the mound in relief of freshman Gina Vivona (Seaford, N.Y.), who pitched into the seventh in her collegiate debut.

Freshman Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.) drove in the lone run of the nightcap setback to Aquinas for Stonehill, as fellow freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.) had a pair of hits in the setback for the Chieftains. Freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound in the second game for Stonehill in her collegiate debut.

Stonehill continues play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday morning, as the Chieftains square off with Bridgeport at 9:00 a.m. and with Holy Family at 11:00 a.m. in a pair of non-league outings at Cape Coral Field.
