FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Stonehill softball team continued play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday morning by dropping a 10-5 non-league decision to Bridgeport at Cape Coral Field. The Chieftains’ second scheduled contest of the day against Holy Family was postponed due to rain and has not yet been re-scheduled.

Junior Sarah Mantor (Fresno, Calif.) went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs, including a homer, for the victorious Purple Knights (2-3), who overcame an early 3-0 deficit to forge a 3-3 tie through three innings of play. Stonehill (1-4) took a 4-3 lead in the fourth when sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.) stole home on a double steal, but Bridgeport took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with four runs, highlighted by Mantor’s three-run homer.

The Chieftains had grabbed a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat on an RBI single by senior Kate McAuley (Franklin, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by junior Christine Grenache (Leominster, Mass.), and Stonehill collected its other run of the contest in the fifth on freshman Jaime Ippolito’s (Chelsea, Mass.) first career home run. Ippolito collected two of the Chieftains’ five hits on the day, as Cidlevich allowed seven hits and only four earned runs while fanning five in taking the setback on the mound for Stonehill.

Juniors Suzanne Parr (Juneau, Ak.) and Jacque McCaw (Loveland, Colo.) each drove in a pair of runs in the win for Bridgeport, as sophomore Samantha Mantor (Fresno, Calif.) allowed just five hits and a pair of earned runs in picking up the win on the mound for the Purple Knights.

Stonehill resumes play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday afternoon by taking on St. Joseph’s (Ind.) at 1:00 p.m. and Cornerstone at 3:00 p.m. in a pair of non-league contests at Cape Coral Field.
