Men’s Cross Country Wins First New England Title in Program History

Two Skyhawks take home All-New England honors

BOSTON, Mass. (October 7, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked second in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) East Regional poll and 23rd in the national poll took home the title over among 27 teams at the New England Championship Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park.

Stonehill finished with 119 points, for the program's first New England Championship in program history, defeating multiple Division I programs. MIT was the runner up with 124 points, while UMass Amherst wrapped up the top three with 133 points. Central Connecticut State University placed fourth with 166 points, while Dartmouth rounded out the top five with 192 points. Vermont tallied 194 points and UMass Lowell totaled 241 points, good for sixth and seventh, respectively, while Northeastern University (243 points), Yale (247 points), and Maine (275) finished out the top-10 teams.

The Skyhawks were the first Northeast-10 team to cross the finish line, as American International College was next in 11th place, totaling 277 points.

Senior Jimmy Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) earned his first cross country All-New England honor and second career, as he finished fifth with a time of 25:29.

Junior Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) was the only other Skyhawk to earn All-New England honors, as it was his first cross country accolade and second career. Dowd placed ninth crossing the finish line with a time of 25:33.

Senior Kenny Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate) placed 24th among 180 competitors with a time of 25:56. Junior Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) finished 38th with a time of 26:07, while classmate Lucas Taxter (Readville, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) wasn't far behind with a time of 26:14, good for 43rd in the eight-kilometer race.

Seniors Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford) and Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) were the final Skyhawks to cross the finish line. Bradford clocked in at 26:35, good for 66th, as Southiere took 82nd with a time of 26:53.

Stonehill takes a week off before taking on the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, which will be hosted by American International College, on Sunday, October 22, at Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts.
