Men’s Cross Country Finishes First at 49th Codfish Bowl

Dowd took the individual title, followed by Murphy

BOSTON, Mass. (September 23, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked second in the East Region and 22nd in the national rankings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, earned its third title of the season at the 49th Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park Saturday afternoon.

The Skyhawks totaled 32 points at the event, while Merrimack College placed second with 58 points and Westfield State University finished third with 106 points. Wentworth Institute of Technology took fourth with 122 points, as Bridgewater State University rounded out the top five with 137 points.

With three packs running at a steady state, the Skyhawks were able to get the job done as junior Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) was the first Purple and White competitor to cross the finish line with a time of 27:10, good for sixth place. Jimmy Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) and Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) followed Dowd, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Murphy clocked in with a time of 27:11, as Carney crossed the line at 27:13.

Junior Alexander Demeule (Merrimack, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) finished 12th out of 118 competitors with a time of 27:26, as freshman Jeff Pichie (Burriville, Rhode Island/Burriville) followed him in 13th with a time of 27:34 in the eight-kilometer race.

Freshman Sean Conlan (Melrose, Massachusetts/Melrose), senior Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford), and junior Lucas Taxter (Readville, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) all crossed the finish with a time of 28:00, good for 20th, 21st,and 22nd. Senior John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) was the final Skyhawk to cross the finish line with a time of 29:07, good for 37th place.

Stonehill looks to best its 11th-place finish at last year's New England Championships on Saturday, October 7 at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
