#21 Men's Cross Country Finishes Second at Kutztown DII/DIII Challenge

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 19, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked No. 21 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Poll and first in the East Region, posted a second-place finish this morning at the Division II/Division III Challenge, hosted by Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

Stonehill, which also finished second at this even last September, placed two inside the top-10 and all five of its scoring runners in the top-20 on its way to a score of 59 in the 12-team field. Shippensburg (Pa.) University took the team title with a score of 37, while American International College finished third (81) host Kutztown took fourth (109) and Lock Haven (Pa.) University (113) rounded out the top-five.

Junior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) paced the Skyhawks with his fifth-place finish in 26:23.6 on the eight-kilometer Farm Course, improving upon his 20th place effort (26:47.4) from a year ago.

Senior Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) also turned in a top-10 performance, finishing seventh overall out of 106 entries and clocking in at 26:29.5.

Classmate Dan Gordon (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) followed a pack of five Shippensburg runners, placing 14th in 26:52.6, while freshmen Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) and Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) were the final two scoring Stonehill entries in 16th (27:04.2) and 17th place (27:05.2), respectively.

Two more freshmen, John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) and Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) were the next Skyhawks to cross the finish line. Onken clocked in at 27:15.0, good for 20th overall, and Demeule finished 24th in 27:22.8.

Stonehill will be back in action next Saturday, September 26th at the Ted Owen Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State University at Stanley Park in New Britain, Connecticut.
