#23 Stonehill Finishes 19th At New England Championships


Sophomore Robert Massey was the third Skyhawk to finish at today's New England Championships, coming in 102nd with a time of 26:03.

Zawalich, Fontanella are first two Skyhawks to finish

BOSTON, Mass. (October 12, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked 23rd in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, and ranked first in the East Region poll, earned a 19th place finish out of 41 teams competing in today's New England Championships held at Franklin Park.

Stonehill finished with 521 points, sandwiched between 18th place and fellow Northeast-10 member American International College and 20th place Division I member Quinnipiac University. Central Connecticut State University won the event with 74 points, followed by Northeastern University, Dartmouth College, and Boston University.

Junior Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's) was Stonehill's top finisher, placing 59th with a time of 25:41. Zawalich was followed by senior captain Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) who finished 100th overall, clocking in at 26:02. Just two spots and one second later came sophomore Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), in 26:03.

Senior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) was the fourth Skyhawk to complete the course, doing so in 26:14, good for 114th place. Sophomore Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Academy) placed 146th with a 26:35 mark, and he was followed by senior Scott Waller (Andover, Mass./Andover), who finished 170th in a time of 26:47. Rounding out Stonehill's competitors was junior Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington), who finished 196th out of 279 participants, completing the race in 27:01. 

Stonehill will be off next weekend before returning to action on October 27th at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, which will be hosted by Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.
