#21 Skyhawks Finish 21st At Paul Short Invitational

Cina guides Stonehill with 85th place finish

Paul Cina led the Skyhawks with a 85th place finish overall.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (September 28, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked 21st overall in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Division II national poll and second in the East Regional poll, placed 21st overall out of 37 programs in the Gold Race of the 39th Annual Brooks-Paul Short Run on Friday morning on Goodman Campus.

Villanova University placed first overall scoring 69 points while the College of William & Mary edged out Georgetown University, 100-101, to take second place honors. Dartmouth College was fourth overall (175) and Providence College finished fifth (194) to round out the top-5. Stonehill scored 623 points to slip by Queen's University (624) and also ranked ahead of UMass Lowell (731), who is currently positioned first overall in the USTFCCCA East Regional Poll.

Junior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) highlighted the Skyhawks efforts on the afternoon with an 85th place finish overall in 25 minutes and 23 seconds on the 8-kilometer course.

Sophomore Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's) finished 119th overall with a time of 25:44, classmate Dan Gordon (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) was 130th overall in 25:49, senior Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) crossed the line in 25:51 (137th place) and sophomore Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) rounded out Stonehill's top-5 with a 152nd place finish in 25 minutes and 57 seconds.

The Skyhawks top-5 runners were only separated by 35 seconds as Zawalich, Hanlon and Wilcox all posted new personal bests on the 8-kilometer course. Stonehill's 35-second gap ranked tied for fourth overall among all programs in the race.

Other Stonehill Highlights Include:

Junior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished 154th overall in the Gold Race in 25 minutes and 27 seconds.

Classmate Mike Amirault (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) ranked 173rd overall as he crossed the finish line in 26:06 to round out the Skyhawks top-7 in the Gold Race.

In the men's open 8k race, senior Timothy Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) placed 18th overall with a time of 25:51.

The Skyhawks return to action on Sunday, October 7 at the New England Championships in Westfield, Massachusetts at Stanley Park.
