Penney Named NE-10 Men’s Athlete Of The Week

Senior captain led Stonehill to a second place finish at the Minutemen Invitational

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2012) – Stonehill College senior tri-captain Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) men's cross country Athlete of the Week by the league office, it was announced earlier today.

Penney led Stonehill to a second-place finish at the UMass Minutemen Invitational on Saturday with a career best time of 24:26.42 on the 8-kilometer course for third-place overall. The Skyhawks, ranked 25th overall in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Division II preseason poll, finished with 45 points while UMass Amherst took top honors with 39 points.

Penney's third place finish on Saturday was more than one minute faster than his previous career best as he surpassed his prior high-water mark of 24 minutes and 27.43-seconds which was set at the NE-10 Championships on October 23, 2011 (sixth place overall). For his efforts last season, Penney was named to the NE-10 All-Conference First Team for the first time in his career.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday, September 28 at the Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at 10 a.m.
