North Easton, Mass. - The 2007 championship portion of the Stonehill cross country schedule begins on Saturday with the 94th running of the New England Championships at the famed Franklin Park course in Dorchester.

The women's race begins at 12:45 p.m. followed by the men at 1:30 p.m.

On the men's side, the Skyhawks, who enter the event ranked sixth in the latest USTFCCCA Division II poll, have fared well in the past on this course. They finished 12th in 2006, ninth in 2005, ninth again in 2004 and their best-ever finish 4th -place in 2003. In that 2003 race, Mario Fraioli posted the program's top time in the event with a seventh place finish (24:38).

Several key runners for Stonehill have had success and experience in the event, with senior captain Joe Ryan (Chelmsford, Mass.) crossing the line in ninth place a year ago. He has also recorded finishes in 50th (2005) and 107th in 2004 as a freshman.

David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) had a 32nd place finish in 2004 to help the Skyhawks to their ninth place finish. Then as a sophomore, he was Stonehill's top finisher (17th) as they duplicated their finish from the previous year. His 37th place result last season helped the Skyhawks complete the course in 13th.

Meanwhile, the Skyhawk women enter the race ranked 16th in New England after having moved up one spot from last week's poll. In three of the last four years, Stonehill has finished 14th, including the last two years.

Senior Lesley Clunie (Newburyport, Mass.) and sophomore Andrea Topalis (Simsbury, Conn.) are the only two runners on the Skyhawk roster who have run in the event previously, with Clunie finishing in a non-scoring 158th spot as a freshman and Topalis wrapping up last year's race in 124th, good for third amongst the seven Stonehill runners.

An added bonus for Stonehill will be the return of junior Kristina Coriaty (Brockton, Mass.), who missed the first two events due to injury. Coriaty, the winner of the Connecticut College Invitational, is a two-time Northeast-10 athlete of the week.

Following the New England Championships, the Skyhawks will host the Northeast-10 Championships on Sunday, October 21.
