BOSTON, Mass.-- Eighth-ranked UMass Lowell captured its third NCAA Division II Northeast Regional Men's Cross Country Championship in the last four seasons on Sunday afternoon by posting a team of 32 points to best 2005 champion and 15th-ranked Stonehill's team score of 47 points in the 2006 race held at Franklin Park. Both squads will represent the region at the 2006 NCAA Division II National Championships that will take place on Saturday, November 18th as part of the Division II Fall Sports Festival in Pensacola, Fla.

Juniors Keith Gill (Brockton, Mass.) and David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) paced the Skyhawks with third and fourth place performances, respectively, with times of 31:20 and 31:23 over the 10K layout. Senior Tim Catoggio (Bradford, Mass.) and junior Joe Ryan (Chelmsford, Mass.) were next for Stonehill with times of 31:57 and 32:01, respectively, that were good for ninth and 10th places, as Gill, Metzger, Catoggio and Ryan each earned all-NCAA Northeast Regional honors for their efforts. Freshman Josh Andrews (Chelmsford, Mass.) closed out the Skyhawk scoring by placing 19th individually with a time of 32:32, as he was the third rookie to cross the finish line on the day.

"To be making another trip to NCAA nationals is a great accomplishment for this team," Stonehill Head Coach Karen Boen said after the championship race. "I'm proud of having four individuals make all-region with their performances, and we will be ready for another strong effort at the nationals."

The 2006 NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country National Championship will take place on Saturday, November 18th at the Escambia County Equestrian Center in Pensacola, Fla. beginning at 9:00 a.m. Stonehill will be making its fourth straight trip to the NCAA championships, having posted a pair of top 12 finishes in two of the last three years.
