Metzger Paces Men's Cross Country To Strong 11th Place Team Finish At Iona Meet Of Champions

THE BRONX, N.Y.-- Both Stonehill cross country teams impressed against predominantly Division I competition on Saturday afternoon, as the Skyhawk men placed 11th and the Stonehill women placed 15th at the Iona Meet of Champions held at Van Cortlandt Park.

Sophomore David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) led the pack on the men’s side by placing 46th individually for Stonehill, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 25:56. Sophomore Dickie Gerry (Bow, N.H.) was next in 59th place for the Skyhawks with a time of 26:16, while senior T.J. Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished 79th overall at 26:32. Sophomores Joe Ryan (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Khalid Abdi (Brockton, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for Stonehill by placing 129th and 132nd, respectively, with times of 27:11 and 27:12. Arkansas won the men’s team title, with host Iona placing second and Cornell finishing third.

On the women’s side, senior Erin Smith (Brockton, Mass.) led the way for the Skyhawks by placing 46th individually with a time of 23:11 over the 5K layout, while senior Kaitlin Buckley (North Kingstown, R.I.) was next in 53rd place with a time of 23:23. Junior Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) followed in 75th place with a time of 23:39, while sophomore Meghan Barrett (Norfolk, Mass.) and freshman Kasey Black (Hanson, Mass.) rounded out the Stonehill scorers by placing 132nd and 150th, respectively, with times of 24:32 and 24:57. Cornell took top team honors in the women’s race, followed by Iona and Dartmouth, respectively.

Both Stonehill squads return to action next Saturday morning when the Skyhawks head to Smithfield, R.I. to compete at the Bryant Invitational, as the women’s race begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men’s race at 11:15 a.m.
