Sousa Posts Fourth Place Individual Finish As Men's Cross Country Places Fourth Overall At Bryant Invitational

SMITHFIELD, R.I.-- Both Stonehill cross country teams recorded top four finishes during competition at the Bryant Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Skyhawk women placed third while the Stonehill men came in fourth in the nine team field.

Senior Kristen Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) led the way on the women’s side for Stonehill by placing fifth individually, as she covered the 5K layout in a time of 20:51. Junior Jill Allen (Peabody, Mass.) was next in seventh place for the Skyhawks with a time of 20:56, while freshman Jenny Gardynski (Everett, Mass.) and sophomore Lesley Clunie (Newburyport, Mass.) followed in 24th and 25th place, respectively, with times of 22:02 and 22:04. Sophomore Mary Donovan (Sudbury, Mass.) rounded out the Stonehill scoring by placing 30th with a time of 22:25. Assumption took top team honors with a score of 65 points, followed by Saint Rose (72 points) and the Skyhawks (91 points).

On the men’s side, sophomore Kyle Sousa (North Dighton, Mass.) led the way with a fourth place individual finish for Stonehill, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 28:17. Sophomore Ryan Gattoni (East Sandwich, Mass.) was next in 17th place with a time of 29:10, while sophomore David Wasserman (East Hampton, Conn.) and freshman Richard Finnegan (North Scituate, R.I.) followed in 26th and 27th place, respectively, for the Skyhawks with times of 29:37 and 29:42. Sophomore Andy Schaalman (North Andover, Mass.) rounded out the Stonehill scoring by placing 40th with a time of 30:28. Host Bryant took top team honors in the race, followed by Merrimack, Saint Rose and Stonehill, respectively.

Both Stonehill squads will compete for their respective New England championships next Saturday morning at the All-New England Championships that will be held at Franklin Park in Boston beginning at 11:00 a.m.
