Men’s Tennis Turns Back Wheaton, 5-4

NORTON, Mass. (October 7, 2021) - Stonehill College closed out its fall non-conference schedule with a 5-4 triumph over Wheaton College in men's tennis action at Clark Tennis Courts this afternoon.

The Details

  • Junior Luke Nickerson clinched the match win for Stonehill by battling past Wheaton freshman Karl von Weissenbeck at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
  • Sophomore Louis Coppi was a double-winner to lead Stonehill. He and freshman Guillaume Duhil de Bénazé teamed up for the Skyhawks first doubles point with their 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Coppi followed that up with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Wheaton junior Ethan Na that gave the Skyhawks a 4-1 lead at the time.
  • Wheaton battled back to knot the match at 4-4 with wins and No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. Senior Ian Tracy and junior Josh Anshuetz were double-winners for the Lyons, starting by winning the Lyons lone doubles point with their 8-3 win at No. 1. Anshuetz followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles over Stonehill junior Christian Duffy to pull the Lyons within a point after Tracy had won at No. 1 singles.
  • Senior Albert Ortega Campos leveled the match with his three-set win against Stonehill fifth-year Trent Newman at No. 3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 6-1.
  • Junior Ben Simmons added a singles win for Stonehill, while Newman and senior Juan Camilo Riano Rojas chipped in a win at No. 3 doubles.

Stonehill (4-0, 0-0 NE10) will announce its spring NE10 Championship season schedule in the coming weeks. Wheaton (0-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) is off until February for a non-conference match with Endicott College on February 26.
