Men's Tennis Drops Wheaton, 6-1

EASTON, Mass. (February 23, 2020) – Stonehill College remained undefeated in dual matches with a 6-1 victory over Wheaton College in non-conference men's tennis action inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon. 

How it Happened

  • Freshman Christian Duffy led four double-winners for Stonehill in the match with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. He and sophomore Vincent Huynh didn't drop a game in rolling to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles as the Skyhawks swept the three matches to earn the doubles point in the match. Duffy followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles against Wheaton sophomore Ian Tracy for the Skyhawks third point in the match.
  • Huynh battled past senior Zach Strempel at No. 4 singles, taking the first set by a tiebreaker (7-2), before Strempel forced a third set tiebreaker by winning the second set, 6-4, before Huynh rolled 10-2 in the super breaker.
  • Senior Samuel Miller and sophomore Russell White clinched the doubles point for Stonehill as they battled to a 7-6 (7-5) decision against Tracy and senior Ned Roosevelt at No. 1 doubles.
  • White provided the match-clinching point for the Skyhawks with his 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision at No. 2 singles against freshman Josh Anshuetz.
  • Miller posted the first singles point for Stonehill with his 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 against Roosevelt.
  • Senior Aaron Diamond also registered a point for Stonehill with his 6-3, 6-0 win against freshman Jack Luyrink at No. 6 singles.
  • Freshman Ethan Na posted the lone point for Wheaton, battling past Stonehill sophomore Juan Camilo Riano Rojas at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 12-10.

Stonehill (5-0, 0-0 NE10) is back in action next Saturday, February 29, when it visits Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region rankings. The Skyhawks next home match is its Northeast-10 Conference opener against Assumption College on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Wheaton (1-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Endicott College next Saturday at 4 p.m.
