Newman/White reach Round of 16 for Doubles Championship

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 15, 2019) – The Stonehill College men's tennis program saw its run at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional come to a close on Saturday night, but not before more strong play at the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Stonehill's doubles team of juniors Trent Newman and Russell White made some program history by reaching the Round of 16 in the men's championship before bowing out with an 8-3 setback to No. 3-seeded Tom Pitchley and Erik Jorsal from Chestnut Hill College. It's the deepest run by a Stonehill doubles team in the championship bracket on record and matches the longest by a Skyhawk overall, having been accomplished multiple times in the singles championship. Newman and White opened Saturday with an 8-3 second round win over Adelphi University's Pietro Sole and Sabin Adrian Saveluc.

Stonehill's doubles tandem of sophomore Juan Camilo Riano Rojas and freshman Ben Simmons were halted in their second round matchup with Chestnut Hill's Adam Gavin and Kai Adler.

White also reached the second round of the men's singles championship before being edged in a third set tiebreaker by 14th-seeded Eduardo Marino from Queens (N.Y.) College. White took the opening set 6-3, before Marino rallied 6-1 in the second and took the third set breaker 10-2. White, who emerged from Friday's qualifiers, posted a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 triumph in the first round against Tony Khamassi from St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Freshman Christian Duffy also reached the main draw of the men's championship, but dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to 16th-seeded Alvaro Barranco from St. Thomas Aquinas in the first round.
