Men's Tennis Battles Past Adelphi, 4-3

Skyhawks win four of six singles matches, capped by Diamond's clincher

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (April 9, 2019) – Stonehill College won four of the six singles matches to claim a 4-3 victory over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Point Set Indoor Racquet Club this afternoon.

Junior Aaron Diamond clinched the win for Stonehill when he out-dueled Adelphi sophomore David Leader, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 6 singles. The win capped the Skyhawks comeback after Adelphi earned the first point by winning two of the three doubles matches.

Sophomore Russell White and freshmen Vincent Huynh and Juan Camilo Riano Rojas spearheaded the rally by notching the first three singles wins in the match for a 3-1 lead. White gave Stonehill its first point with his 7-5, 6-1 win over Adelphi junior David Robres de Veciana at No. 3 singles. Riano Rojas followed with a 6-4, 6-1 decision against junior Ilya Kalabukhau at No. 5, and then Huynh defeated freshman Volodymyr Petrushevskyi, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4.

Sophomore Lucas Attride-Stirling was a double-winner for Adelphi. He teamed up with Robres de Veciana for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles and then pulled the Panthers back within 3-2 by battling past Stonehill junior Samuel Miller, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2 singles. Kalabukhau and freshman Finn Krause clinched the doubles point for the Panthers with their 6-4 win at No. 3.

Stonehill (10-6, 2-3 NE10) returns home on Thursday to host Saint Anselm College for an NE10 match at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (2-8, 2-3 NE10) visits Assumption College on Sunday at 3 p.m.
