NYIT Snaps Men's Tennis Streak, 5-2


Huynh is 10-0 in dual match singles play after recording his ninth-straight win today

Caldas and Huynh lead Bears double-winners

EASTON, Mass. (March 24, 2019) – New York Institute of Technology, ranked No. 3 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, picked up a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior Francisco Caldas and senior Kevin Huynh led a list of four double-winners for NYIT, who earned the doubles point by sweeping the three doubles matches and then winning four of the six singles matches to snap Stonehill's four-match winning streak. Caldas and freshman Diego Espiniella combined for the Bears first doubles win with their 6-0 sweep at No. 1. Caldas, ranked No. 10 in the latest Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill sophomore Trent Newman  that clinched the match win for the visitors.

Huynh and junior Jean Kehyayan clinched the doubles point for NYIT with their 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, rallying from 3-4 down to win the match. Huynh followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against freshman Juan Camilo Riano Rojas. Castaldo, ranked No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, was also a double-winner for the Bears, taking his match at No. 2 singles after he and doubles partner, freshman Yago Granda, ranked No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA East Region doubles rankings, completed the doubles sweep with their 6-1 win at No. 2. Granda rounded out the double-winners for the Bears by edging junior Aaron Diamond in a third set super-tiebreak.

Freshman Vincent Huynh posted his ninth-straight singles win and improved to 10-0 in dual match singles play this season for Stonehill, rallying from a set down to defeat Espiniella, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Junior Manu Ravichandrakumar also earned a point for the Skyhawks when Kehyayan retired with Ravichandrakmar leading in the third set, 2-6, 6-4, 4-2.

Stonehill (8-3, 0-0 NE10) is right back in action on Tuesday, when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule by hosting Assumption College at 3:30 p.m. NYIT (5-4, 0-0 ECC) hosts Roberts Wesleyan College for its East Coast Conference opener on Friday at 2 p.m.
