Miller and Huynh Lead Stonehill at ITA East Regional

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 16, 2018) – Stonehill College men's tennis newcomers Samuel Miller and Vincent Huynh both reached the main draw of the men's singles bracket to highlight its participation at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional at the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center this weekend.

Miller, a junior transfer from Saint Francis (Pa.) University, reached the round of 64 with qualifying round wins over Tomer Mendler from Concordia (N.Y.) College (8-4) and Andrew Freeman from Roberts Wesleyan University (8-4). He was then defeated by Borna Markusic from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 6-3, 7-5 in a tightly contested match.

Huynh, a transfer from West Liberty University, also advanced to the Round of 64. He posted qualifier wins over Joe Alvord from Post University (8-3) and then Rit Flandreau from Saint Anselm College (8-1). Huynh fell to Franklin Pierce University's Roberto Chong 6-1, 6-4, the 19th-ranked singles player in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings, in the Round of 64.

Miller and Huynh also earned wins in the men's doubles bracket. Miller and freshman Juan Camilo Riano Rojas posted a first round 8-4 win over Nicolas Sitiras and Lars Olson from Concordia, while Huynh and sophomore Russell White defeated Ilya Kalabukhau and Luke Stirling from Adelphi University, 8-5 in the first round. Miller and Riano Rojas fell in the second round to Erik Jorsal and Thomas Pitchley from Chestnut Hill College, 8-3, while Huynh/White fell to Conrad Koch and Jonathan Garcia from Merrimack College, 8-3.

White and junior Aaron Diamond each posted opening round wins in the qualification bracket, before being defeated in the second round for a chance to reach the main draw.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday, September 26, when it hosts Emerson College for a non-conference match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 6 p.m.
