Riano Rojas Named NE10 Rookie of the Week

Bradenton, Florida, freshman earns honors after opening collegiate career with 4-1 combined record

EASTON, Mass. (September 12, 2018) – Stonehill College freshman Juan Camilo Riano Rojas has earned Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week honors for men's tennis, the league announced.

Riano Rojas earns NE10 Rookie of the Week honors following the opening weekend of his collegiate career as he posted a combined 4-1 record in singles and doubles play. The Skyhawks opened with a 9-0 non-conference win at Regis College as Riano Rojas was a double-winner, posting wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles. He and junior Samuel Miller eamed up for an 8-6 doubles win and then Riano Rojas cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 singles win against Johnny Pallotta.

Riano Rojas and Miller then paired for the B-Doubles Bracket at Saturday's Stonehill Doubles Invitational, posting a third place finish at the event. The duo opened with an 8-2 quarterfinal win over Jack Cook and Erik Antonacci from Colby-Sawyer College, before being edged 8-3 by Chris Lansing and Kyle Fager from the US Coast Guard Academy in the semifinals. Riano Rojas and Miller rebounded with an 8-6 decision in the consolation final against Assumption College's Brandon Sze and Jameson Keppeler.

Riano Rojas, the son of Nixon Riano and Nancy Rojas, was born in Bogota, Colombia, and moved to Florida at the age of 15 to attend and train at IMG Academy in Bradenton. He was a Top 30 juniors player in his native Colombia, participating in the South America Tennis Confederation (COSAT) the South American junior tour. Riano got his start playing tennis at the age of nine, later competing for the Bogota Tennis League for five years prior to deciding to move to Florida to attend IMG. While at IMG Academy, Riano competed on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tour and participated at the prestigious Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl Championships.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE10) is back in action this weekend, when it participates in the USTA/ITA Division II East Regional at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, Friday through Monday. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, September 26, when it hosts Emerson College at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 6 p.m.
