White leads three double-winners for Skyhawks who keep postseason hopes alive

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 13, 2018) – Stonehill College gave its postseason chances a massive boost by capping the regular season schedule with a 6-3 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Assumption Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Stonehill (10-8, 4-5 NE10) now awaits the results of Saturday's NE10 matches between Adelphi University and Bentley University, and to a lesser extent, Assumption (4-10, 2-6 NE10) and Franklin Pierce University, to determine if it will return to the NE10 Tournament after a one year absence. The Skyhawks simplest route to the NE10 Tournament is an Adelphi loss at Bentley and Franklin Pierce win. An Adelphi win over Bentley would eliminate the Skyhawks. Assumption hosts Franklin Pierce tomorrow at 11 a.m. The NE10 Tournament opens with first round action on Tuesday.

Seniors Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) and Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and freshman Russell White (Toronto, Ontario/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) were all double-winners to lead Stonehill to the key victory. Buckley and Lisichenok breezed to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles for the Skyhawks, leading the visitors to a 2-1 edge after doubles play. Lisichenok followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 singles against Assumption sophomore Jameson Keppeler (Syracuse, New York/Christian Brothers Academy), while Buckley rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles against freshman Luke Whitehouse (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton).

White clinched the win for Stonehill with a back and forth 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles against junior Danny Waung (Bolton, Massachusetts/East Catholic). White earlier teamed up with sophomore Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Trent Newman (Old Greenwich, Connecticut/South Burlington) also picked up a point for Stonehill with his win at No. 2 singles.

Senior Ryan Foster (Bloomfield, Connecticut/Classical Magnet) helped earn two points for Assumption. He and freshman Max Francis (West Barnstable, Barnstable) edged out a 9-8 (10-8) triumph at No. 1 doubles for the Greyhounds and then Foster claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill senior Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph).
