Skyhawks put up fight in singles play, but fall to regionally-ranked Penmen

EASTON, Mass. (March 24, 2018) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, swept past Stonehill College, 9-0, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex today.

Seniors Ricardo and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) led Southern New Hampshire's list of double-winners on the afternoon. The duo led a sweep of the three doubles matches with their 8-3 decision at No. 2. Ricardo Marreiros followed that by battling his way past Stonehill sophomore Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Miguel Marrieros was pushed to the limit by senior Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers), rallying from a set down to win at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Stonehill senior Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) took the first set against SNHU senior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal), ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, before falling 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Senior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) also pushed sophomore Bas Van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) at No. 5 singles before being edged 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Stonehill (7-5, 1-2 NE10) is back in action on Thursday, when it visits rival Bentley University, ranked seventh in the region, for an NE10 match at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Tuesday, April 3, to host Adelphi University at 3:30 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (6-6, 5-0 NE10) hosts Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday at 2 p.m.
