Buurma leads Saints to win, while Bellio/Newman remain unbeaten for Skyhawks

LAKE NONA, Fla. (March 5, 2018) – Aquinas College edged Stonehill College, 5-4, in non-conference men's tennis action at the USTA National Training Center today.

Seniors Will Buurma (Bradenton, Florida/Bradenton Christian) and Ryan Fedewa (Spring Lake, Michigan/Spring Lake) led Aquinas as double-winners for the match. Buurma and junior Austin Luker (Ann Arbor, Michigan/Ann Arbor Huron) first combined for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles for the Saints, before Buurma defeated Stonehill freshman Trent Newman (Old Greenwich, Connecticut/South Burlington)  6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Fedewa and senior Kenny Garstecki (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Fedewa followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Stonehill senior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) at No. 4 singles. Junior Chase Peery (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan/Brother Rice) also picked up an important singles win for the Saint with his 6-3, 6-4 triumph over senior Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) at No. 1 singles.

Bellio and Newman earned Stonehill's doubles point with their 8-6 win at No. 1 over Peery and senior Jordan Lomas (San Diego, California/Torrey Pines) to remain unbeaten through five matches together. Freshman Russell White (Toronto, Ontario/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla,)) won a back and forth 6-4, 0-6, 13-8 victory at No. 3 singles against Garstecki. Senior Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) and sophomore Aaron Diamond (Moultonborough, New Hampshire/Moultonborough Academy) each notched singles wins for Stonehill this weekend. Lisichenok rallied from a set down to notch a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Bryant senior Evan Taylor (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills East) at No. 6 singles.

Stonehill (4-3, 0-0 NE10) is right back in action tomorrow morning, when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule against Saint Anselm College at the USTA National Center at 11:30 a.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, March 24, to host regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University at 1 p.m. Aquinas (3-3, 0-0 WHAC) competes against University of Saint Francis in Central Florida tomorrow at noon.
