Men's Tennis Stonehill Blanks Wheaton, 9-0

EASTON, Mass. (February 25, 2018) – Stonehill College picked up its third-straight win with a 9-0 decision over Wheaton College in non-conference men's tennis action inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex today.

Senior Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and freshman Trent Newman (Old Greenwich, Connecticut/South Burlington) led Stonehill to the win as double-winners at the top of the Skyhawks lineup. The duo improved to 4-0 at No. 1 doubles with their 8-5 decision this afternoon, clinching a sweep of the doubles matches. Bellio followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Wheaton sophomore Jorge Aguirre Martinez (Madrid, Spain) that clinched the team win, while Newman topped junior Jeremiah Ryser (Cross River, New York/Regis) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.

Freshman Russell White (Toronto, Ontario/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) rallied for a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 10-8 triumph at No. 3 singles for Stonehill against freshman Javier Esteban de Celis (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Spain) in the match of the day. White also combined with sophomore Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, with Ravichandrakumar also winning at No. 4 singles. Senior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) rounded out the Skyhawks double-winners with his victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 singles, dropping just two games over his three sets of play.

Stonehill (4-2, 0-0 NE10) is off until Sunday, March 4, when it opens its spring break trip to Central Florida against Aquinas College of Michigan. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, March 24, to host regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University at 1 p.m. Wheaton (1-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) visits Fullerton College on Monday, March 12.
