Queens Defeats Men's Tennis in Spring Opener, 7-2

Bellio/Newman notch big win at No. 1 doubles for Skyhawks

FLUSHING, N.Y. (February 17, 2018) – Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked No. 2 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, posted a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference men's tennis action inside the QC Tennis Center tonight.

Senior Lucas Martinez (Buenos Aires, Argentina) posted both singles and doubles wins to lead Queens to the win. He combined with classmate Gabriel Mendez (Pachuca, Mexico) to clinch a 2-1 Knights edge in doubles play with their 8-3 decision at No. 2. Martinez followed that up by posting a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Stonehill freshman Russell White (Toronto, Ontario/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)).

Junior Jose Zurro (Valladolid, Spain) earned the clinching point for Queens with his 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles against sophomore Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)). Classmate Cosme Jubera (Logrono, Spain), ranked seventh in the ITA East Regional singles rankings added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against freshman Trent Newman (Old Greenwich, Connecticut/South Burlington).

Newman did team up with senior Tom Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) to post an impressive win at No. 1 doubles for Stonehill's point in doubles play. The duo edged senior Roman Laga (Baiersbronn, Germany) and junior Stanislas Bedrune (Ventabren, France) 9-8 (7-3). Laga is the region's ninth-ranked singles player.

Sophomore Aaron Diamond (Moultonborough, New Hampshire/Moultonborough Academy) earned a point for Stonehill at No. 5 singles, rallying for a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 10-6 triumph over Queens senior Miguel Bendito (Maracay, Venezuela).

Stonehill (1-2, 0-0 NE10) wraps up its opening weekend tomorrow against Saint Thomas Aquinas College, ranked sixth in the region, in Flushing at 4 p.m. Queens (4-0, 0-0 ECC) hosts Fairleigh Dickinson University on Monday at noon.
