Men's Tennis Falls on Day One of ITA East Regionals

Three Skyhawks collect first round qualifying wins

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 23, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's tennis program competed on day one of the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional, presented by Oracle, hosted by Adelphi University and Queens College, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center today.

Sophomore Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) and freshmen Trent Newman (Old Greenwich, Connecticut/South Burlington) and Russell White (Toronto, Ontario/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) each notched first round wins in the qualifying draw, but all six Stonehill competitors were eliminated on the opening day of the event.

Ravichandrakumar opened his day with an 8-6 victory over NYIT sophomore Jean Kehyayan. He followed that up by being dealt an 8-2 loss by Franklin Pierce University freshman Roberto Chong in the second round.

Newman breezed to an 8-0 sweep in his first round match against Post University junior Peter Rossel, but was then dealt an 8-5 setback by Concordia (N.Y.) University's Michele Fenoaltea. White opened his tournament with an 8-3 win over Saint Anselm College senior Adam Weinstein, before being defeated by Jefferson University sophomore Oskar Haedicke 8-5 in the second round.

Senior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) was defeated in the first round of the qualifying bracket and all three Stonehill doubles teams were defeated in the first round of the main draw. White and Newman we dealt a tough opening round draw against fifth-seeded Axel Oljons and William Nilsson from Concordia, falling 8-2.

Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE10) is back in action on Tuesday, when it visits Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m.
