Freshman duo strong in collegiate debuts for Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (September 12, 2017) – Stonehill College freshmen Russell White (Toronto, Ontario/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) and Trent Newman (Old Greenwich, Connecticut/South Burlington) opened their collegiate careers by winning the A-Doubles bracket at the Stonehill Doubles Invitational held Saturday at Charles Watt Tennis Courts and the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex.

White and Newman clinched the A-Doubles title in a tiebreaker over the Coast Guard Academy team of Tom Hackett and Adam Bahney, 8-7 (7-4). It marked White and Newman's second win of the day by a tiebreaker after opening the eight-team bracket with an 8-7 (8-6) decision against Alex Partyka and Henry Siercke from Eastern Nazarene College. The Skyhawks tandem reached the final with an 8-4 victory against the Connecticut College combo of Ben Sachs and SangJin Song.

Assumption College's Danny Waung and Max Francis won the B-Doubles bracket with an 8-4 victory against Connecticut College's Patrick Farrell and Henry DeCoster. Stonehill senior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and sophomore Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) won the consolation final after being defeated by Adam Weinstein and Daniel Kmetz from Saint Anselm College in the quarterfinals. Buckley and Ravichandrakumar posted an 8-5 win against Brendan White and Jared Deibe in the consolation final.

Stonehill senior Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) and freshman Joey Conrod (Newtown, Connecticut/Newtown) reached the final of the C-Doubles bracket, before being edged by Ethan Hecker and Zak Danz from Connecticut College. Lisichenok and Conrod opened the bracket with an 8-1 quarterfinal win against Erich Steiner and Luke Whitehouse of Assumption College, and then grinded out an 8-7 (12-10) triumph in the semifinals against John Hu and Ben Errington from Coast Guard.

Stonehill freshmen Jeffrey Eng (Guilford, Connecticut/Guilford) and Aleksander Lazowski (Kingston, Massachusetts/BC High) advanced to the D-Doubles final, before being dealt an 8-6 setback to Coast Guard's Kyle Fager and Chris Lansing. Fager and Lansing won the bracket by posting a pair of wins against Stonehill competition, topping senior Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) and sophomore Aaron Diamond (Moultonborough, New Hampshire/Moultonborough Academy), 8-5 in the semifinals.

Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action when it opens its fall dual match schedule by hosting Division I College of the Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 20, at Watt Courts at 3:30 p.m.
