Assumption Halts Men's Tennis, 6-3

Waung and Leung lead Greyhounds to key NE10 win

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2017) – Assumption College halted Stonehill College's two match win streak with a 6-3 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this evening.

Seniors Chris Waung (Bolton, Connecticut/East Catholic) and Marco Leung (Macao) both posted wins in singles and doubles play to lead Assumption to the key win between programs battling for a spot in next week's NE10 Tournament. The duo combined to edge Stonehill juniors Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) 9-8 (7-4) at No. 1 doubles as the Greyhounds earned a 2-1 edge after doubles play. Waung, the No. 11-ranked singles player in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, followed with a three-set win over Bellio, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Leung rallied for a 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 10-6 decision at No.3 singles against freshman Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)).

Junior Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) and freshman Aaron Diamond (Moultonborough, New Hampshire/Moultonborough Academy) both picked up singles wins for Stonehill after its 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles for the Skyhawks by junior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and Ravichandrakumar. Gagnon defeated Assumption senior Casey Hodor (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, while Diamond rallied past senior Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Minnechaug Regional) at No. 6 singles in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Stonehill (6-7, 4-3 NE10) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Le Moyne College for its final regular season home match at Watt Courts at 3:30 p.m. Assumption (5-2, 4-2 NE10) hosts Bentley University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
