Bellio leads Skyhawks with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles

TEWKSBURY, Mass. (March 29, 2017) – Merrimack College, ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, claimed an 8-1 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Trull Brook Golf & Tennis Club this afternoon.

Senior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Massachusetts/Nauset Regional) and junior Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) led Merrimack to its third straight win with a pair of victories in singles and doubles play. Majewski and junior Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia), the No. 5-ranked doubles team in the region by the ITA, combined to lead a sweep of the three doubles matches with their 9-7 win at No. 1. Majewski followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles against Stonehill freshman Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)).

Vega and freshman Alex Federov (Guilderland, New York/Guilderland) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Vega followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles for the Warriors, while Federov won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

Junior Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) earned Stonehill's lone point with his 7-5, 3-6, 11-9 triumph at No. 1 singles against Belov. Junior Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) and sophomore Dimitri Vlassov (Marblehead, Massachusetts/Marblehead) battled at No. 3 doubles before falling in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4). Gagnon also went three sets against sophomore Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Connecticut/Ludlowe) at No. 5 singles, while freshman Aaron Diamond (Moultonborough, New Hampshire/Moultonborough Academy) fell in three sets at No. 6.

Stonehill (3-5, 1-1 NE10) returns to the courts on Saturday when it hosts Bentley University for their Purple & White match at 1 p.m. Merrimack (5-5, 3-0 NE10) visits Adelphi University, ranked fifth in the region, on Saturday at noon.
