Men's Tennis Opens Spring with Win at Wheaton, 6-3


Lisichenok posted wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles this afternoon.

Lisichenok and Vlassov double-winners for Skyhawks

NORTON, Mass. (February 25, 2017) – Stonehill College opened its spring season with a 6-3 victory at Wheaton College in non-conference men's tennis action at Beard Fieldhouse today.

Junior Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led Stonehill to its first dual match win by earning points at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. He teamed up with classmate Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles as the Skyhawks took two of the three doubles matches. Lisichenok followed that up with a back and forth 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-4 singles triumph over freshman Jo Aquirre Martinez (Madrid, Spain).

Sophomore Dimitri Vlassov (Marblehead, Massachusetts/Marblehead) was also a double-winner for Stonehill with victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. He combined with junior Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) to edge out a 9-8 (7-2) victory to clinch the advantage heading into singles play. Vlassov added a 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 decision against freshman Diego Garcia Anton.

Junior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and freshman Aaron Diamond (Moultonborough, New Hampshire/Moultonborough Academy) also earned singles wins for Stonehill.

Sophomore Jeremiah Ryser (Cross River, New York/Regis) picked up a pair of wins for Wheaton. He combined with freshman Zachary Strempel (Longmeadow, Massachusetts/Longmeadow) for the Lyons lone doubles point with an 8-1 win at No. 2. Ryser also rallied for a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 1 singles against Bellio.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Endicott College for a non-conference match at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex at 7 p.m. Wheaton (0-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts UMass Dartmouth tomorrow at 4 p.m.
