Men's Tennis Battles Past Saint Anselm, 6-3

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 16, 2016) – Stonehill College won five of six singles matches on its way to a 6-3 victory at Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action today.

Sophomores Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led Stonehill with singles and doubles wins again. The duo teamed up for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and then both followed that up with straight sets singles wins. Bellio defeated Saint Anselm sophomore Eric Howes (Shawnee, Kansas/Mill Valley) at No. 1 singles, while Lisichenok topped sophomore Adam Weinstein (Vernon Rockville, Connecticut/East Catholic) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.

Stonehill erased a 2-1 deficit after doubles play by winning five of six singles matches. Junior Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/St. Joseph School) defeated freshman Daniel Kmetz (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over sophomore Brian Kavanagh (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Minnechaug Regional). Sophomore Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) contributed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against sophomore Kyle Harris (North Reading, Massachusetts/North Reading).

Saint Anselm took two points from doubles play as Kmetz and Weinstein notched an 8-3 win at No. 2, while Kavanagh and sophomore Alex Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) combined for an 8-1 victory at No. 3. Sophomore Benji Page (Concord, Massachusetts/Gould Academy) earned the Hawks lone singles point with his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Stonehill senior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield).

Stonehill (9-7, 5-3 NE-10) returns to the courts on Wednesday when it visits Le Moyne College for a Northeast-10 match at 11:30 a.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, April 23, to host Adelphi University, ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Saint Anselm (3-9, 2-5 NE-10) visits Franklin Pierce University on Monday at 3 p.m.
