Doubles sweep steers Penmen to victory

EASTON, Mass. (April 12, 2016) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked tenth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, swept doubles play on its way to a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Sophomores Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) were both double-winners to lead Southern New Hampshire to the win. The eighth-ranked doubles team in the East Region by the ITA capped a sweep of the three doubles matches with their 8-6 victory at No. 2. Marreiros, the tenth ranked singles player in the region  by the ITA, followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill sophomore Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph). Aubron, the 16th-ranked player in the region, added a back and forth 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles against junior Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/St. Joseph School).

Sophomore Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) also claimed singles and doubles wins for SNHU. He teamed up with classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles before adding a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 4 singles against sophomore Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM).

Stonehill's three points all came with singles wins, led by sophomore Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) who posted a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles against Miguel Marreiros, the region's 12th-ranked singles player. Senior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) and sophomore Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) also earned points for the Skyhawks with straight sets wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

Stonehill (7-7, 4-3 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Wheaton College for in a makeup of a postponed non-conference match from April 1 at 3:30 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (8-7, 7-0 NE-10) visits Post University on Thursday at 3 p.m.
