Men's Tennis Defeats Clark in Opener, 6-3

Buckley and Gagnon earn singles and doubles wins to lead Skyhawks 

EASTON, Mass. (September 16, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its dual match schedule with a 6-3 victory over Clark University in non-conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Sophomores Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) led Stonehill to the win by earning points for both singles and doubles. The duo teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles as the Skyhawks took two of the three doubles matches on their way to the win. Buckley followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles against Clark junior Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Massachusetts/Falmouth). Gagnon was leading sophomore Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Florida/Donna Klein) 6-4, 4-3 at No. 5 singles when Siegel retired.

Senior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) and freshman Michael Doody (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) clinched Stonehill's second doubles point with a 9-7 win at No. 3. Senior Philip Klados (Lake Forest, California/Santa Margarita Catholic) earned a point for the Skyhawks with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against senior Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania/Radnor). Sophomore Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) added a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against senior Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador).

Pinoargote and Pinkney teamed up to earn Clark's lone doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 1. Freshmen Andrey Samodaev (Boca Raton, Florida/Boca Raton Prep International) and Mateo Gomez (Bogota, Columbia) both added singles wins for the Cougars. Samodaev defeated Stonehill freshman Dimitri Vlassov (Marblehead, Massachusetts/Marblehead) 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4, while Gomez edged Tierney 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 6.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action this weekend when it competes at the United States Tennis Association/ITA Division II East Regional Championships, hosted by Chestnut Hill College, Saturday through Monday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Skyhawks next dual match will be its lone Northeast-10 Conference match of the fall season at Franklin Pierce University next Thursday, September 24, at 2 p.m. Clark (0-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) is off until October 9 when it visits Assumption College at 3:30 p.m.
