Stonehill Eases Past American International, 8-1

Skyhawks open four match week with third straight NE-10 win 

EASTON, Mass. (April 6, 2015) – Stonehill College rolled to its third straight win with an 8-1 decision over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Stonehill got contributions throughout its lineup, getting three points toward victory by default as well. Freshmen Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led the Skyhawks to a sweep of the three doubles matches by combining for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, which proved to be the deciding point in the match. Senior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville) and freshman Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) teamed up for an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill earned points at No. 3 doubles, as well as No. 5 and 6 singles by default, but also won three of the four singles matches that took the court to complete the win.  Senior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against American International senior James Worrall (Epsom, England). Freshman Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) added a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against senior Jason Popek (Hamilton, Ontario), while junior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman Johno May (Mahtomedi, Minnesota) at No. 4.

Graduate student Alfie Cleave (Exeter, England) earned American International's lone point with a back and forth 6-4, 0-6, 10-5 battle against Stonehill senior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) at No. 2 singles.

Stonehill (10-4, 5-1 NE-10) is right back in action on Thursday when it hosts Assumption College for a makeup NE-10 match at Watt Courts at 3 p.m. American International (0-4, 0-3 NE-10) hosts Adelphi University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
