Saint Joseph, Michigan, freshman earns honors for third time

EASTON, Mass. (March 24, 2015) – Stonehill College freshman Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) has earned Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for men's tennis for the third time by the league office today.
Bellio, who also collected NE-10 Rookie of the Week honors twice during Stonehill's fall season in back to back weeks on September 30 and October 7, earns the weekly honor for the first time during the spring championship season. He led the Skyhawks to a 5-0 victory at Wheaton College in their lone match of the week as a double-winner. Bellio teamed up with classmate Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers), last week's NE-10 Rookie of the Week, for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles against Wheaton's David Gassen and Lawrence Chan. Bellio followed that up with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles against Gassen.
Bellio is a combined 17-6 for Stonehill during his first collegiate season, posting a 7-3 mark in singles play and a combined 10-3 doubles record with two different playing partners. He is 7-1 overall this year at No. 1 singles, including a 2-0 clip in Northeast-10 play, to go with a 7-3 doubles record with Lisichenok, posting a 2-0 NE-10 record. Bellio was also recognized for his work in the classroom with a spot on both the Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll at Stonehill.
Stonehill (7-3, 2-0 NE-10) returned to action this afternoon with a key Northeast-10 matchup at Adelphi University, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings. Tomorrow's non-conference home match against Post University has been postponed due to snow on Charles Watt Tennis Courts. The Skyhawks next scheduled home match is next Tuesday, March 31, when it hosts Bentley University at 3 p.m.
