Adelphi Defeats Stonehill, 7-2

Litvinchuk and Cannavera lead double-winners for Panthers 

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (March 24, 2015) – Adelphi University, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, remained unbeaten in league play with a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Point Set Racquet Club today.

Junior Uladzislau Litvinchuk (Brest, Belarus) and freshman Matteo Cannavera (Quartu Sant'Elena, Italy) led Adelphi's four double-winners in the match. Cannavera teamed up with senior Chiwete Njokanma (Lagos, Nigeria) for an 8-3 win at No. 1 singles and then Cannavera, the 12th-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles against Stonehill senior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic). Njokanma was also a double-winner for the Panthers by adding a 6-4, 6-3 decision over freshman Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) at No. 3 singles.

Litvinchuk and junior Sander Brenner (Port Washington, New York/Paul D. Schreiber), the 10th-ranked doubles team in the region by the ITA, combined for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles for Adelphi. Litvinchuk followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles against senior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville), while Brenner defeated senior Jon Sanders (Holbrook, New York/Saint Anthony's) 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.

Drzal and freshman Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) earned a point for Stonehill with their 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. Junior Philip Klados (Lake Forest, California/Santa Margarita Catholic) collected a point for the Skyhawks while leading 7-5 following the first set when senior Ryan Villarruel (Staten Island, New York/St. Peter's Boys) withdrew due to injury.

Stonehill (7-4, 2-1 NE-10) has had tomorrow's non-conference matchup with Post University postponed due to the continued snow cover at Charles Watt Tennis Courts. The Skyhawks are now scheduled to return to action on Saturday when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked ninth in the region, at 1 p.m. Stonehill's next scheduled home match is next Tuesday, March 31, when it hosts rival Bentley University, ranked tenth in the region, at 3 p.m. Adelphi (4-3, 4-0 NE-10) hosts Bentley Sunday at 10 a.m.
