Stonehill Posts Spring Break Win Over St. Francis, 6-3


Freshman Thomas Bellio earned wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Skyhawks today.

Bellio and Lisichenok lead Skyhawks as double-winners 

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (March 9, 2015) – Stonehill College got its spring break schedule off to a winning start with a 6-3 victory over University of Saint Francis (Ill.) in non-conference men's tennis action at Sanlando Park this afternoon.

Freshmen Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led Stonehill to the victory as double-winners on the afternoon. The duo led the Skyhawks to a 2-1 advantage after doubles play with an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles. Bellio followed with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-1, 10-7 triumph at No. 1 singles against Saint Francis junior Boris Peshev (Auckland, New Zealand). Lisichenok added a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against senior Diego Mogrovejo (Cuenca Azvay, Ecuador).

Senior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) rallied for a 0-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over senior Alex Haizel (Oak Lawn, Illinois/Marist) at No. 2 singles for Stonehill. Classmate Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, New York/Saint Anthony's) also earned a singles point for the Skyhawks with his 6-0, 2-6, 11-9 triumph at No. 5 against freshman Luka Dordevic (Kragujevac, Serbia). Senior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville) and freshman Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) teamed up for an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Mark Zubov (Saint Petersburg, Russia) was a double-winner for Saint Francis. He teamed up with Peshev for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles and then defeated Drzal 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Lucas Navarro (Valencia, Spain) added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles against freshman Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School).

Stonehill (5-1, 2-0 NE-10) is right back in action on Tuesday when it faces Saint Cloud State University in Lakeland, Florida, at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, March 21, to host Assumption College for a Northeast-10 match at 1 p.m. Saint Francis (4-5, 0-0 CCAC) had a second match against Connecticut College later in the afternoon.
