Baron a double-winner to lead Knights to regional win

EASTON, Mass. (March 6, 2015) – Stonehill College opened its spring schedule with a 9-0 setback to Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, in non-conference men's tennis action at Brown-Billone Tennis Club today.

Senior Christopher Baron led five double-winners for Queens with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles. He teamed up with freshman Gabriel Mendez for an 8-3 doubles victory and then posted a 6-0, 6-1 singles win over Stonehill senior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic).

Sophomore Sharvill Nawghre and junior Ryan Frankel combined for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and then Nawghre followed that up with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against senior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville). Frankel added a 6-2, 6-2 decision against senior Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, New York/St. Anthony's).

Stonehill freshman Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) took the first set of his match at No. 3 singles against freshman Lucas Martinez 6-3, but Martinez rallied to win the second set 6-3, before earning the win with a 10-8 super tiebreaker in the third.

Martinez and sophomore Federico Toscano edged Drzal and freshman Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) at No. 3 doubles and then Toscano defeated freshman Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

Stonehill (4-1, 2-0 NE-10) returns to action on Monday when it opens its spring break trip with a dual match against University of Saint Francis (Ill.) at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, March 21, to host Assumption College for a Northeast-10 match at 1 p.m. Queens (4-0, 0-0 ECC) visits MIT tomorrow at 1 p.m.
