Miller Wins 300th as Stonehill Tops Assumption, 6-3

Skyhawks clinch postseason berth in earning Miller's 300th career win 

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 10, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, clinched a spot in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with a 6-3 victory over Assumption College in NE-10 men's tennis action this afternoon.

In addition to locking up a spot in next week's NE-10 Tournament, today's win marked the 300th career win for Stonehill head coach Peter Miller who has now posted a 300-222 (.575) record over his 34 seasons at the helm of the men's tennis program. Miller, a 1975 graduate of Stonehill, was inducted into the College's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) led the way for Stonehill with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles. He and junior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) clinched a 2-1 Skyhawks lead after doubles play with their 8-4 win. Hyzak followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Assumption freshman Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn./East Catholic). Drzal was also a double-winner for Stonehill, adding a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles against postgrad Matt Drolet (Cumberland, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy).

Junior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) picked up wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles for Stonehill. He teamed up with junior Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for an 8-4 doubles win before adding a 6-0, 6-1 win against sophomore Matt Surpenant (Norwich, Conn./Saint Bernard's). Senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) also earned a point for the Skyhawks with his 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles against postgrad Michael Breen (Holden, Mass./St. John's).

Sophomore Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland) led Assumption with wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles. He and Waung posted an 8-4 doubles decision and then Rahnasto followed that up by posting a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Stonehill sophomore Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic). Freshman Marco Leung (Macao) claimed a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles for the Greyhounds over junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic).

Stonehill (11-7, 6-3 NE-10) is back in action with its final NE-10 regular season match of the season at Merrimack College on Saturday at noon. Assumption (7-7, 3-5 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
