Queens Edges Stonehill in Key Regional Clash, 5-4

Hidass, Baron and Pellegrino lead double-winners for Knights 

FLUSHING, N.Y. (March 23, 2014) – Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked 6th in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, won two of three doubles matches and then claimed the top three singles flights to post a key 5-4 victory over Stonehill College, ranked 9th in the region, in a key regional non-conference men's tennis matchup this afternoon.

Senior Younes Hidass (Rabat, Morocco), the tenth-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA, led three double-winners for Queens with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. He and junior Kevin Burgess (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) combined for a vital 9-7 decision over Stonehill senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and junior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) that clinched a 2-1 advantage for the Knights after doubles play. Hidass followed that up with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Hyzak in singles.

Seniors Christopher Baron (Quebec, Canada) and Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) were also double-winners for Queens, combining for an 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles. Baron followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Stonehill junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic), while Pellegrino recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 against senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy).

Juniors Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) and Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) were double-winners for Stonehill. The duo combined for an 8-0 sweep of their No. 3 doubles match against juniors Adam Pizow (Forest Hills, N.Y./Hebrew Academy of Nassau County) and Howard Wong (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills). Alaimo added a 6-2, 6-0 win over Burgess at No. 4 singles, while Sanders breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wong at No. 6. Drzal also picked up a point for the Skyhawks with his 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles against Pizow.

Stonehill (8-3, 4-0 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it visits Bentley University, ranked 8th in the East Region, for a big Northeast-10 Conference match at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday to host American International College at 1 p.m. Queens (7-1, 0-0 ECC) opens its East Coast Conference schedule at Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Friday at 3 p.m.
