Stonehill Picked Third in NE-10 Men’s Tennis Poll

Skyhawks enter spring schedule with 4-0 NE-10 mark 

EASTON, Mass. (February 17, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, has been picked to finish third in the Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis coaches' poll released by the league office prior to the start of the spring schedule.

Stonehill, under the direction of Peter Miller in his 34th season as head coach, enters the spring season with a 5-0 record overall, including a 4-0 clip in the NE-10, after the fall portion of its schedule. The Skyhawks received 74 points in the coaches' poll, which is led by defending Conference champions Merrimack College (98 points) who collected eight first place votes from the league's 11 head coaches. Southern New Hampshire University (93 points) is ranked second and received the three remaining first place votes, while Bentley University (73) and Adelphi University (65) round out the top five.

Stonehill posted NE-10 wins on the road against Saint Anselm College (9-0), Le Moyne College (8-1), Saint Michael's College (8-1) and Franklin Pierce University (7-2) during the fall portion of the schedule. The Skyhawks also picked up a 9-0 decision over Division I College of the Holy Cross in their lone home dual match of the fall season. Senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) led Stonehill during the fall season with a combined 10-2 record in singles and doubles play, going 4-1 at No. 1 singles, including a 3-1 NE-10 mark, while teaming up with three different partners for a 6-1 doubles record, going 3-0 in NE-10 play.

Junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic), the 2012 NE-10 Rookie of the Year, is a combined 10-2 so far this season, posting a 5-0 record at No. 2 singles, including a 4-0 NE-10 clip, while he and senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) have posted a 5-2 doubles record, including 3-1 at No. 1 and a 3-1 NE-10 mark. Armstrong is also 4-1 in singles play, including a 3-1 league mark.

Stonehill opens the spring portion of its 2013-14 schedule on Saturday, March 1, when it hosts the University of Southern Maine, coached by former Skyhawk Aaron Bergeron, '12, for a non-conference matchup at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex at 6 p.m. Stonehill's next NE-10 dual match is at Bentley on Thursday, March 29, at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks will host Southern New Hampshire for their Purple & White game on Tuesday, April 1, at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 4:30 p.m.
