NE-10 TOURNAMENT: #5 Adelphi Holds Back #4 Stonehill, 5-2

Chacron leads three double-winners for Panthers with clinching singles win

EASTON, Mass. (April 17, 2013) – Fifth-seeded Adelphi University, ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, held off fourth-seeded Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings and tenth in the ITA East rankings, for a 5-2 triumph in first round action of the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis tournament at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Adelphi (13-7, 6-3 NE-10) advances to Friday's semifinal round where it will face top-seeded Merrimack College (12-4, 9-0 NE-10), ranked fifth in the NCAA East Regional rankings, at North Andover High School at 2 p.m. Stonehill sees its season come to a close with a 15-9 record overall, 6-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, having made its 14th appearance in the NE-10 Tournament.

Freshman Alan Chocron (Aventura, Fla./Dr. Michael Krop) led three double-winners for Adelphi, clinching the win with his come from behind 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Stonehill freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) at No. 4 singles. The victory came after the Panthers had won two of three doubles matches, but Stonehill held the lead one of the two remaining singles contests and was a game away from forcing a deciding third set in the other as Adelphi held to a 4-2 lead. Chocron and sophomore Chiwete Njokanma (Lagos, Nigeria) combined for an 8-4 decision at No. 3 doubles.

Njokanma was also a double-winner for Adelphi by following with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles over junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy). Senior Andreas Hammar (Norrtalje, Sweden) rounded out the double-winners for the Panthers. He teamed up with classmate Bryan Kallenberg (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) for an 8-6 win at No.1 doubles to clinch the 2-1 Panthers lead in doubles play. Hammer also took Adelphi within a point of the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic).

Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) was victorious in his final collegiate match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles over Adelphi freshman Boris Tiberkov (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael Krop) to keep Stonehill in the match. Junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) teamed up to notch the Skyhawks lone doubles victory with their 8-2 decision over Tiberkov and sophomore Ryan White (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) at No. 2. Hyzak was just a game away from winning his match at No. 2 singles, while Alaimo was a game shy of forcing a third set at No. 3.
